Grant Description
We are partnering with Muso as it works with governments to build health systems that deliver rapid, quality care across the full continuum — from early detection and frontline care in communities to timely treatment at public, upgraded health facilities.
Across West and Central Africa, gaps in prenatal care and access to essential primary health services lead to preventable maternal and child deaths. Our partnership will help Muso deliver its Rapid Care approach for hundreds of thousands of patients across Mali and Côte d'Ivoire while supporting governments to expand the Rapid Care strategies proven effective - professional Community Health Workers, strengthened primary care and care without fees.
This grant was selected in part based on the strength of the evidence that Muso's Rapid Care approach saves lives and Muso’s long track record of delivering quality care in difficult contexts.
A randomized controlled trial published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization found that communities implementing Rapid Care reduced child mortality by 63% and odds of acute malnutrition by 68%. These results were notably achieved during a period of active armed conflict. An earlier study found that one of Muso’s sites in peri-urban Mali achieved an under-five mortality rate lower than any country in sub-Saharan Africa.
Muso has sustained government partnerships across Mali and Côte d'Ivoire through political instability, conflict, and significant operational challenges. After nearly two decades of impact, Muso is now working with three national governments, including Zambia, aiming to embed proven approaches within national health systems and drive lasting, government-led systems change at scale.
