We partnered with MiracleFeet on a three-year grant to support cost-effective work helping children born with clubfoot walk, run, and play without disability.
Grant Description
Each year, about 1 in 800 children are born with clubfoot — a condition that, left untreated, leads to lifelong disability.
With support from this partnership, MiracleFeet intends to scale access to treatment in 37 low- and middle-income countries, potentially enabling thousands of children to access the Ponseti method, a non-surgical casting and bracing technique that restores full foot function in approximately 90% of cases. MiracleFeet plans to scale the program to reach 14% of global cases by 2028.
This grant was made based in part on the strength of the evidence base of the Ponseti method and the cost-effectiveness of providing treatment at a low cost relative to the estimated increase in lifetime learnings.
The Ponseti method is the World Health Organization-supported standard of care for clubfoot, with clinical literature citing correction rates between 90–100%. MiracleFeet monitors treatment quality in real time across all partner clinics, tracking metrics such as early detection rates and treatment dropout rates. In FY2024, MiracleFeet met every benchmark it set.
At an average cost of $500 per child, clubfoot treatment is estimated to generate approximately $130,000 in additional lifetime earnings.
